Overview: The mechanical subteam of Team 612 gave members a preview of what the beginning of build season, kickoff, will be like.
OCTOBER 7TH, 2024, CHANTILLY, VA. The mechanical subteam of Chantilly Robotics has been observed in a campaign to educate the next crop of engineers, most recently through an exercise called a “mock kickoff”.
Using the Crescendo theme of 2023’s FIRST season, the team discussed the different components present within a FIRST robot, from the style of “intake”, designed to collect game pieces off of the floor, which allows the “shooter” to launch them and score points for the team. The team delved into the key concepts behind a robot’s efficiency, with concepts such as KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and minimal degrees of freedom highlighted as primary areas of focus
Building off the previous presentation’s brainstorming, mechanical members are immediately thrust into an interactive demonstration of Onshape, the team’s cloud-based Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) program.. The hands-on learning experience is very helpful as it allows the teammates to create newer parts with ease during the stress of build season, and builds the foundation for learning new design concepts in the future.
Along with creating skillful engineers, the purpose of these lessons is to streamline the mechanical subteam’s role during the real build season, building efficient designers and active problem solvers for the future workplace.
