Overview: FRC 612 hosts FLL Tournament at Chantilly High School
NOVEMBER 18TH, CHANTILLY VA. Last Saturday, FIRST Lego League Teams from across the Dulles region gathered at Chantilly High School to participate in a robotics competition, hosted by FRC Team 612.
First Lego League, a collaboration between FIRST and the Lego Corporation, aims to teach students 4th-8th grade STEM principles through a variety of events: A robot game, similar to that of FRC, an innovation and research project, and a robot design presentation. Theodore Kramer, a member of Chantilly Robotics’ marketing subteam was questioned on his experience refereeing the robot game, “The kids were awesome! It was really exhausting but super rewarding to see their unique solutions to the missions,” he said, referring to the variety of engineering challenges faced by the students. “As refs, we tried to make sure to stay fun and fair,” He said, laughing. “We need them to keep coming back for more!”
The dedication of the teams was not just noticed by the referees, either. Event judges such as Clayton Kramer, a parent volunteer for Chantilly tasked with ranking the team’s innovation projects and design presentations with other parents. “I was impressed with their enthusiasm, especially the first-year teams who had to figure it out all on their own. Their positivity, problem solving, outreach, and the depth of research teams demonstrated was incredibly impressive.” he said when asked about his time, highlighting Team 612’s commitment to fostering capability in not just engineering, but public speaking and teamwork as well.
Overall, the event was a resounding success for Chantilly’s 40+ high school volunteers and hundreds of FLL competitors. In the words of electrical subteam member Avin Leung, “we spread STEM by showing our commitment to FIRST characteristics through our inclusivity, leadership and fun!”
