Team 612 Shifts Into High Gear: Build Season

Updated: Sep 23, 2023

Overview:

  • After a year of virtual meetings, Team 612 hosts its first in-person event: Kickoff 2022

  • All subteams on our team are hard at work, with each member contributing to its success.

  • Competition is just on the horizon, so we are ensuring a productive build season!

JANUARY 28, 2022, CHANTILLY, VA. Chantilly Robotics FRC Team 612 is in full-swing build season mode with all our members working diligently to build a robot for the 2022 Rapid React season!

On January 8, over 50 Chantilly Robotics members gathered to watch the FIRST Robotics Competition Kickoff live stream, where this year’s competition game, Rapid React, was revealed. As our first official team-wide event since quarantine, we were ecstatic for the chance to finally meet all our members and begin our season. After watching the FIRST Game Kickoff feature, our members split up into small groups to annotate the game manual and start strategizing. After a team-wide discussion and group presentations, our leadership and captains finalized a strategy for our robot this year. This marked the beginning of our 6-week build season process with meetings 4 days a week, marking seventeen total work hours per week. After strategy, members spent the first week of our build season process designing different parts of the robot, which was all consolidated into one single plan. Since then, members of each subteam have been earnestly working in order to build, wire, and program our robot.

With the help of our captains and leadership, members are gaining a first-hand

experience of key skills required for a season. Our mechanical subteam is hard at work ‘CADing’ the robot using OnShape as well as assembling various components such as the chassis, the wheels, and more. In addition, our programming subteam is currently working on programming the various components of the robot: intake, climb, movement. Our electrical subteam has submerged itself into the world of electronics by testing various components such as pistons and strategizing wiring plans. Last but not least, our marketing subteam is vigorously working on the items for the Chairman’s Award, which includes two write-ups, a video, and a presentation. Along with that, they are ensuring that our team’s social media presence is strong, filming weekly Youtube vlogs detailing our build season–which can be found on our YouTube channel–, creating Instagram posts, and designing new merchandise.

We value collaboration between all our subteams and ensure that each member’s ideas are welcomed. With little over 4 weeks left in our build season, competition seems to be inching closer day by day and our team is hard at work to ensure the creation of a successful robot.
