The Climber Prototype

Overview:

  • 612 has started to work on prototypes.

JANUARY 8, 2024, CHANTILLY, V.A. As Chantilly Robotics (FRC 612) build season begins, the team eagerly works on prototypes for our 2024 robot.

Crescendo, the name of the 2024 FRC Challenge incorporates a musical theme, where the robots score game pieces, called Notes, into a low-scoring goal, the Amp, or a high goal, the Speaker. At the end of a match, our robot must climb a chain and attempt to score a Note into a high goal, called the Trap. (Watch a short video about the 2024 game here).

To tackle this project, Team 612 split into groups, each tasked to create a specific prototype for each required function of this year's game. One prototype team is focused on “The Climber”, the part of the robot that grabs onto the chain and hoists the robot off the ground by the end of the match. One prototype design uses a double-stage hydraulic piston system with a claw at the end. The piston stage one keeps the robot level while the second piston stage locks onto the chain. The team is excited to push this innovative piston system prototype into design and testing.

Other prototype teams focused on other operational requirements of the robot, including the cassis, intake, shooter, and controls. Leadership and mentors met to discuss the path forward for design. Technical team captains are organizing efforts to continue the hard work to innovate and convert prototypes into working features on the robot.

About Chantilly Robotics

At Chantilly Robotics Team 612, we brighten the future for leaders and student

technologists within our team, school and community through fun and engaging methods of

learning and teaching while shining a light on the importance of STEM (science, technology,

engineering, math). Chantilly Robotics was founded in 2001 with eight student members and has

grown to over a 100 members in the 2021 season. Team 612 competes at FIRST Robotics

Competitions in the Chesapeake District and spreads STEM as well as FIRST values through

community outreach. For more information, visit https://www.frc612.org or email
